Intel® Optane™ Persistent Memory (PMem): A Revolutionary Technology for Databases

<  Return to Schedule

Intel Optane Persistent Memory (PMem) offers affordable large storage capacity and support for data persistence. While configuring and using PMem is simple and straightforward, enabling database applications for it requires an understanding of workload demands and differences in operating modes. In this talk, Intel’s Evgeny Kharchenko will introduce major enhancements that came in the Intel Optane Persistent Memory 200 series and will review its operating modes. GridGain’s Val Kulichenko will then share his vision for how advanced hardware technologies like PMem can influence the future of in-memory computing platforms and high-performance databases.

Evgeny Kharchenko

FasterLab, Intel corporation Technical Lead

Evgeny started his career as University scientist/researcher in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics where he wrote and optimized his own CFD application. In 1999 after several years’ break for running his own business he joined VTune Performance Analyser development team of Intel as a Project Lead. In 2003 to 2005 Evgeny’s role was Technical Consulting Engineer covering Intel SW Tools in EMEA. In 2005 he moved to a EMEA Software Enabling Department of Intel and worked as an Application Engineer/HPC Virtual Manager with primary focus on HPC market. Since 2006 Evgeny is a Technical Lead of Intel’s FasterLab working with various FSI clients (including HFT, Risk Analytics and Big Data) helping them to optimise their SW to utilize the full potential of Intel server platforms. For the last two years enabling of Intel® Optane™ Persistent Memory has been Evgeny’s primary focus.

Valentin Kulichenko

GridGain Director of Product Management

Valentin Kulichenko is a distributed systems expert and an open-source software enthusiast. He is one of the original committers and PMC members of the Apache Ignite project — a distributed in-memory computing platform that enables scalability and high performance for thousands of applications all over the world. Valentin contributes to various aspects of the development, including code, documentation, and architectural discussions. During the last 10+ years at GridGain Systems, Valentin has been acting as one of the lead architects of the GridGain platform, which is based on Apache Ignite. He also helped multiple customers of GridGain Systems to adapt the platform to their needs. Currently, as a Director of Product Management, Valentin leads the effort to transition to a new generation of GridGain products, with the main focus on improved usability, faster adoption, and modernization.
